  • Earl Scruggs - Break
  • Key   G
  • Tempo   80 bpm
  • Tuning   gDGBD

Earl played this one around 145 BPM and used pancake tuners, and eventually cam tuners of his own making, to get the signature sound heard in the B part of this tune. We've cooked up a version that closely follows the playing of Mr. Scruggs and does not require cam tuners, "cheat-a-keys", or Keith tuners. It does require nimble movement and accurate timing in the fretting hand and fingers, as do most Scruggs tunes, regardless of the use of special tuners. There's also some lick options for that tuner section. It's a great place to add some different and unexpected flavors and sounds, just like Earl did.

The 2/4 bar in measures 9 and 18 can be a challenge to get both because of the change in time feel and because of the fret hand challenge. There's a more familiar Scruggs style lick option to check out and try if you want or need. Make sure to use the focus feature to nail any of the tough measures, licks, or sections here. As always, take this at your own pace. Don't feel like you have to practice this as fast as Earl performed it, or even half that fast. Go slow. It's ok. Just keep picking and grinning y'all.
