This simple melody for Skip to My Lou is a great place to start for Clawhammer banjo beginners. The melody is important to learn for any song. It should be always be learned first, along with the basic chord changes that go with it.
If you are an intermediate player, try learning this by ear using hide notes. This will be like training wheels for your ear. You'll see the string the notes are on, but not the frets. With a little listening and trial and error, you'll find the right notes and build up your skills playing by ear!
In measures 2 & 6, slide out of your second fret note when moving up to the 5th fret. This will make that position shift easier and add some style and personality.
