Johnson Boys Clawhammer banjo Tablature: One Song, Many Styles
Recomended level: Beginner
A popular folk song and old-time tune. It has even made it's way into the Bluegrass world through "Flatt & Scruggs" and the group "The Johnson Boys" whose name was derived from the tune. Listen to and learn the melody before jumping into the clawhammer version. The melody has all the important notes of a tune. It is the identity of a tune and you need to know it. Check out the clawhammer - basic version if you want to get a sense of how to add in the "bum-ditty" to get that classic clawhammer sound. That version is based on the way it was recorded by "The New Lost City Ramblers". The clawhammer version is a bit more embellished and features some very cool licks. Use those Tunefox tools to learn the tough parts a measure at a time, and practice at a slow speed that's easy for you.
All the versions are in Double C tuning. Make sure to adjust your banjo before playing these. In jam and band settings, most banjo players use this tuning and a capo at the second fret to get into the standard key of D.
