Church Street Blues - Tony Rice Style

Back
  • Tony Rice Style
  • Key   C
  • Capo   3
  • Tempo   90 bpm
  • Tuning   EADGBE

This version of Church Street Blues is based on the playing of Tony Rice. Tony's unique approach to cross picking is on full display. The phrasing is very tricky and sort of follows the melody but it feels so different because of the syncopation that comes from Tony's picking pattern.

Measures 1-5 is the first big phrase. Then the pickup notes, the last two in measure 5, lead into the next phrase that starts in measure 6 and ends in measure 9. This one is just plain tough because it is so different and unique. It will require extensive listening at a slow speed in Tunefox and of course you need to just live with the original recording of Church Street Blues for a while.

Check out the guitar tablature and follow the suggested pick directions and fret hand fingerings. One of the big components to Tony's sound are his unique picking patterns that are loosely based on the George Shuffler approach - DDU. Tony goes beyond this and does incorporate some alternate picking as well.
