When playing the quarter note melody that comes in measures 1 and 5 you have a few options. Use a rest stroke (pick through and rest the pick on the string directly below), or use a free stroke(one that doesn’t hit a neighboring string). Rest stroke will help you produce a bold tone, free strokes will allow all notes to ring, creating a chord.
