This version of Dueling Banjos starts at the point in the song where things get really get cooking. This is where the rhythm gets going. There's a few call and response licks played at speed, in time and then it goes into the breakdown section where the banjo takes off on the first solo.
There's a few prerequisites to play this tune. You need to have the call and response licks down that are taught in the Phrase by Phrase version. You also need to be able to play some basic rhythm. That's taught in the Create Your Own Rhythm: Breakdown Section you can also check out our learning path for Rhythm Guitar to learn more about the basics of bluegrass rhythm guitar playing.
You can leave out some of the lead in notes or phrases like you see in 1, 3, 5, 13 and so on. If you want you could just play 4 "boom-chucks" for those measures. It's easier and there's less to think about that way. If you are up for a challenge try to switch between the rhythm and lead phrases. In many spots the lead in note at the end of a measure will take the place of your last "chuck" Measures 1 & 3 are examples of this. In other places you'll need to add a "chuck" at the end of a lick, measures 2, 4, & 14 are all examples of that. Check out the licks for some examples. Use your eyes and ears when listening with the tab player and read along. Finally, watch the video for extra help.
