Vernon Derrick was one heck of a mandolin and fiddle player. Proof: he was a Sunny Mountain Boy. That's the name for Jimmy Martin's band: the King of Bluegrass. They don't just let anyone into that esteemed position. Also, you have to have fairly substantial chops to play this tune he wrote.
This tune has some tough triplets, rhythmic syncopation and more. It makes the tune very fun to listen too, but tough to play. Follow the pick direction markings and fret hand fingerings in the mandolin tablature. Listen regularly as practice. Listen slowly with Tunefox and focus on measures or sections with tricky timing. Listen to different recordings of this as well. Darren Nicholson's version is excellent.
