Back
  • Bluegrass - Upper Octave
  • Key   D
  • Tempo   60 bpm
  • Tuning   GDAE

This version of Beaumont Rag for the mandolin spends a lot of time on the higher strings. Try to notice all the different types of scales that are being used. There's major, pentatonic, and some chromatic ideas in this arrangement. Each scale has a particular sound. Getting familiar with that particular sound will help to develop your ear and listening skills. Practice listening!

Follow the pick directions and fingerings in the mandolin tablature. Keeping a consistent pick pattern is very important.

The B part of this tune usually has a cross-picking pattern, but it doesn't layout that great on the mandolin. Here we're instead using arpeggios and syncopation to get the same feel and a similar sound with a lot more ease. Arpeggio just means you're playing chord notes one at a time. Syncopation means the beat just gets a little complex and "feels" a little different. There's a lot of great licks to try once you get comfortable with the basic arrangement.
