All of these licks can be used any time a G chord is being played, regardless of the key a song is in. Most of these licks can be used in a lead or backup context. They are all worth memorizing and should be practiced until they are easy. If you can master these core components of the Scruggs Style language then you will have a much easier time speaking and learning tunes in his style.
There are a lot of ways each lick can be varied. You can change the roll pattern, change the point in the measure where the slur is played, vary the slur type, and the list goes on and on. Check out the few of the variations in the lick switcher to get some ideas on what all is possible.
When listening to your favorite banjo players or bluegrass bands, keep an ear out for some of these phrases. When learning a new tune, try to see if any of these licks make an appearance.
