Rolling backup that follows the harmony line. This is a technique Earl Scruggs used on many songs. A great example is the folk tune, "All the Good Times Are Past and Gone". Earl knew the melody, and obviously the banjo, so he knew which notes to choose that would compliment the Lead singer without stealing their notes!
