This étude is a study in playing up the neck lead & vamping for banjo. You'll use common chord shapes, roll patterns, "licks" and "walks" to play through the chord changes and melody of "Shackles and Chains" on banjo. The first half of the break is a lead, the second half is vamping backup that could be played behind almost any lead instrument.
It is a very common thing to switch lead and backup roles in the middle of a "break". It's especially common on slower tunes like this one. It keeps things interesting to engage the listener more and prevents things from sounding too repetitive.
There are a lot of great licks. Explore those to hear some great backup and lead ideas that you can use in this song or others.
