"Sweet Old Hairy Grandma" a southern classic by a group called "Wizard's Gizzards"...or something like that. This one is based on a simple chord progression of a famous tune. Can you guess what it is by the sound? To be fair, it's a chord progression that's used in countless other songs. It's what's known as a typical "1, 4, 5" in the key of G. It's just G, C, and D. Here the order is flipped to | D | C | G | G |. It gets a slightly different sound that feels more at home on the D chord which makes it a bit "modal".
There are some great melodic licks to explore. These are based in the G Major Pentatonic scale. They are used as fills in measure 4. They "fill" the space where a vocalist would stop singing between phrases to take a breath. All of them are based on the fantastic guitar playing of "King Ed".
