This great instrumental riff is played right out of the "Root" chord shape often used in "vamping"backup. It's an idea that you can apply almost any time you are using that chord shape. Pay attention to the fingering in the banjo tablature. You'll notice a few things. This riff requires hammer-ons, and you can benefit from using, but don't necessarily need, a partial "barre". A barre or "bar" is the fret-hand technique of using one fret hand finger to fret multiple strings on one fret.
