Vamping is a great style of backup for the banjo. Many people learn the basic "boom-chuck" pattern, but not everyone builds a big vocabulary of licks that can make vamping even more fun and interesting. That's exactly why there is a large amount of banjo licks in this arrangement of "Working on a Building" you can draw from.
Remember, these licks can be used anytime you are playing with similar chord "shapes". You don't have to be playing in the key of G to reuse these licks in another song. You just need to be using the same shapes.
The licks here "fill" the space that comes between vocal phrases. This is a tasteful way to add interest. Whenever we play licks that "fill" space, that lick is also called "a fill"!
