Deck the Halls is a great holiday tune to learn on clawhammer banjo. You'll learn to dance around the fingerboard using the G major scale and classic clawhammer moves like the bum-ditty and drop thumb.
Learning the Melody first is always a good idea. Before learning to play the song, you would be wise to learn how it is supposed to sound. This is achieved with repeated listening in Tunefox. If you use a music streaming service, you can also make a playlist with one or multiple versions of "Deck the Halls" and listen regularly.
Another way to learn how a song is supposed to sound and be played is to practice reading. You don't need your instrument for this. Just practice reading the tablature, you can do that pretty much anywhere. Simply reading and imagining playing is a form of practice. It primes your mind to play the song, and you can refresh what you've learned to play by reading or listening.
After learning the basic melody it's also good to practice the chord changes that accompany it. Those are listed above the banjo tablature. Click on the chord bubbles to see fretboard diagrams. They show how to form each chord. If you aren't sure how to play chords or a simple rhythm, then check out the learning path in Tunefox called Getting Started with Clawhammer Banjo. There, you'll find lessons on the basics, banjo chords, and more. That will help to get you playing with more confidence.
If you are comfortable with a basic bum-ditty then check out the Clawhammer - Basic arrangement. That one uses a simplified melody with a straight forward rhythm to get you playing this tune in an accessible way.
The Drop Thumb arrangement, as the name implies, uses a lot of drop thumb maneuvering and nimble fret-hand work to get a sound that is much more melodic and closer to the original melody of this tune. It still maintains that clawhammer flavor by incorporating plenty of bum-ditty.Clawhammer Banjo 102 provides a few drop thumb exercises that will serve as a great warmup to include with your practice routine as you learn Deck the Halls.
