After you have a handle on the basic chord progression you can try to add in a few licks. There are some great fills to explore in measure 4. There's some more complex bluegrass strum patterns and some cross-picking licks that are reminiscent of Tony Rice's style. These fills can also be used in other spots in the song to fill the space between vocal lines. Those other spots are at measures 8, 9, 13, & 17. Try playing rhythm along with the melody to cement the connection between chord changes and the melody.
A lot of the licks show basic boom chuck patterns for the different chords and chord changes in this song. They are only shown once because the boom-chuck pattern that works for one measure of C will work for every measure of C! The same goes for any other chord or chord change.
