The étude uses the melody and chord changes of Columbus stockade blues as a vehicle to practice melodic arpeggios and the common "bum-ditty" rhythm and picking pattern. Melodic arpeggios are simply chord tones played one at time. The bum-ditty rhythm gives an instant "country" feel. It's also known as a shuffle-rhythm. Pay close attention to the pick directions and fingerings suggestions in the guitar tablature.
When playing these arpeggios you can hold down the entire chord shape if you are able to.
