Shady Grove - Basic

Back
  • Basic
  • Key   Dm
  • Tempo   100 bpm
  • Tuning   EADGBE

Shady Grove is a traditional folk tune recorded by many artists. The minor key version of this song was made popular by Doc Watson in the 1960s.

After you learn the basic version as listed, try out this simple experiment to get some variation. There is a hammer-on listed in measure 2 of the guitar tab. If you wanted, you could pick that note with an upstroke instead of using a hammer-on. Similarly, you could use hammer-ons or pull-offs for some notes, even if they are listed as picked notes. You can do this when going from a fretted note to an open note or vice-versa. This is a simple way for you to experiment with variations and different sounds without actually changing the notes, or the rhythm of the notes, in a tune.
