Columbus Stockade Blues - Scruggs Style

Learn Columbus Stockade Blues on the banjo. This is a great Scruggs style arrangement that covers the verse and chorus sections. Usually a solo is only taken over a verse, but there's a lot of great melody, licks and Bluegrass banjo language you can explore in the chorus also. In jam situations solos are often taken over both sections, especially if a lot of pickers are in the circle. This prevents boredom and listener's ear fatigue from playing the same section multiple times in a row.

Listen and read before playing. Always. Keep an ear and an eye out for repeating measures in the banjo tab. Practice just one of each repeating measure. That will make your practice time more efficient and help you progress sooner. The licks in measures 4, 7, 8 & 11 happen a lot in this arrangement. Master them using the focus feature at a tempo you can handle before trying to play the entire song.

Follow fingering suggestions in the banjo tablature, but know there is often alternatives. Sometimes a hammer-on could be played as a slide, or a different finger set could be used for a chord, lick or picking pattern.
