Learn the chord progression and some basic rolling backup for Heartlands by Marcus King. This banjo tablature covers the Intro, Verse, Pre-Chorus and Chorus section of the song. No capo is used here. The 5th string is not used either. If you are going to incorporate the 5th string we recommend you spike it or capo it at the 9th fret.
If you listen to the linked recording in Spotify or Apple music, you will notice the song starts with a fiddle, if you listen closely the banjo is also in the background. The tablature here details the chord progression just after that, when the full band starts playing.
The sections are listed with letters. This is common when mapping out song form (Intro = A; Verse = B; Pre-Chorus = C, and Chorus = D) . While the A chord is listed in the intro and verse the bass player and Marcus are playing 4/1 or an A/E. That just means that for most of the band they are playing an A chord with an E in the bass. Since the range of the banjo is higher, we can just think of it as an A chord and let them worry about the low notes. It does change the sound a lot. Listen to the original song to hear how the bas "pedals" or stays on the same note until the Pre-Chorus and Chorus.
