The banjo standard tuning for banjo is G major. The bulk of Bluegrass vocabulary is built around this tuning and in the key of G. The melodic style is no different. You need to get G major down before venturing off and learning to play melodic style in other keys. Pay close attention to the fingerings for the fretting and picking hands. Try to memorize this scale. Focus on smooth connected playing with steady timing. Forsake speed, especially if it is just resulting in missed notes, sloppy playing, excess tension and frustration.
