Here's a great cross picking version of You Are My Sunshine for guitar. Check out the pick direction markings in the tablature for measure 2. This is the picking pattern you'll use throughout the tune - even when picking a different group of strings. It's a 3 string pattern based on the picking of George Shuffler who played for the Stanley Brothers and literally invented this type of cross-picking. The pattern crosses 3 strings at a time: DUDDUDDU.
If you check out the licks and select the cross-picking lick, you'll find a standard alternating picking pattern which is a more common way of cross-picking on guitar. The tempo here is at 7e, but go slower when first learning and push your tempo when you are able. The Shuffler style is harder to do at very high speeds. It's possible to get it pretty fast, but it has a lower speed ceiling than keeping a steady up and down pattern. Consistent alternate picking is better if your aim is pure speed.
