Potatoes AKA "taters" Are a classic way to start a tune. You play them before the first measure and it lets everyone know who fast you'll be playing. This is a long, two measure kickoff. Here, we are using an a forward roll and pinches. If you wanted to play it short you could use just one of these measures. The second is more indicative you're about to start a tune because of the space that's left by the last pinch, but either could work! Notice we're just doing a forward roll and pinches on important notes in a D chord. As long as you are playing D chord notes, and the timing fills the same amount of space as this, you can create other options that fit those parameters.
