This is an intense arpeggio workout. That means we are playing chord tones one by one to get a melodic sound. All of these chord notes are built from the 7 notes in the A minor scale: A B C D E F G. The chords formed from these notes have different "qualities" most are happy sounding major, or sad sounding minor chords. There is only one "diminished" chord which has an anxious or unsettling sound. Each chord only has 3 notes. These are referred to as a triad. You can build a triad by picking a note and doing two "skips" within the scale. For example A C E gives you an A minor triad. C E G produces the C major triad.
Follow the basic first position fingering rule for mandolin. Pointer or index finger gets notes on the 1st or 2nd frets. Middle finger gets notes on the 3rd or 4th frets. "Ring" finger gets notes on the 5th or 6th frets. You won't need to use your pinky for this exercise, but it usually would get 7th fret notes. The first two arpeggios have fingerings in the mandolin tablature to get you started.
