An "interval" is a term the describes the distance between two musical pitches. The intervals used here are known as major 6ths and minor 6ths. Notice they only differ by one fret. If you know your common Vamping and Closed Position Chords on Banjo you might notice that these interval shapes come right out of the root and 1st inversion chord shapes.
Lyrics are included in this banjo tablature. Knowing how the words & melody connect to the rhythm & chord changes is very helpful to improve your memory and musicality. Notice that the first word of the lyrics "My" is not present. In musical terms that word falls on a pickup note. That means is is played and sung just before the first "down beat" of the song.
