Learning the single string version first will really help you understand the movement of the melody and see where the notes change and how they move up and down in pitch. When playing in the melodic style that if often easy to hear but hard to see. The single string often requires more fret hand work than melodic, and can be very intuitive for your pick hand once you get used to the alternating thumb and index pick pattern.
