G Major - Intervals - 5ths

Back
  • 5ths
  • Key   G

It's time to explore 5ths on the banjo. The "fifth" interval has two types: "Perfect" and "Diminished". These terms describe both the distance between the two notes and also the quality of sound each interval produces. A perfect fifth would be a distance of 7 half steps, or 7 frets, if you played it on just one string. An diminished fifth would be a distance of 6 half steps. Playing an interval on one string helps us understand the interval distance and the sound it creates.

All the 5ths here are the common shapes that occur on banjo when playing them on 2 strings. Experiment with playing them as a harmony, or separately to hear them in a melodic context.

Try to memorize the 2 shapes on each strings. Most 5th intervals are perfect. The shape and sound will be easy to recognize since it occurs so much. The diminished 5th is a more rare occurrence. You'll know it when you see it, and you'll definitely know it when you hear it. It's a pretty unmistakable sound.
