G Major - Intervals - 6ths

Back
  • 6ths
  • Key   G

  • Tuning   gDGBD

It's time to explore 6ths on the banjo. The "sixth" interval has two types: Major and Minor. These terms describe both the distance between the two notes and also the quality of sound each interval produces. A minor third would be a distance of 8 half steps, or 8 frets, if you played it on just one string. A major 3rd would be a distance of 9 half steps. Playing an interval on one string helps us understand the interval distance and the sound that's created.

All the 6ths here are the common shapes that occur on banjo when playing them on 2 strings - as a harmony. Experiment with playing them as a harmony, or separately to hear them in a melodic context.

Try to memorize the 2 shapes on each strings. 6ths are a beautiful sound and common in waltz style backup and more modern banjo playing. A few major sixth shapes are marked with a capital "Major", while minor thirds are marked with a lower case "minor".
