This one is cool. We are truly "rolling" in My Sweet Baby's Arms. Forward rolling that is. uses an "index lead" forward roll exclusively. That means the roll starts with the index finger. The melody is being played with the index as well. Make sure to learn the basic melody before playing this. Learning this will help you know the important notes. You'll be able to see how and why this forward roll is being changed to keep the finger picking pattern - I T M I T M I - while incorporating those important melody notes. Really study the tablature to see these patterns and to closely follow the suggested pick hand fingerings.
While this index led forward roll style is slightly atypical of true Scruggs style banjo playing. It is most definitely a part of Stanley style banjo playing. Ralph Stanley that is. check out the licks to incorporate some variation and a few typical Scruggs style licks. If you don't have any experience with the forward roll then check out this lesson to learn how to do a forward roll. To get a little extra practice playing the roll, then check out this lesson for "Boil Them Cabbage Down" to practice using the roll while switching chords.
