D Minor Pentatonic Guitar Tablature: One Song, Many Styles

Recomended level: Beginner

Tags: #exercise, #minor key

Learn the D minor pentatonic scale for guitar! The tablature shows you the frets for the one octave scale and all of the "neighbor notes" that are available in first position on the guitar. Use the suggested fret hand fingerings and pick directions.

How you practice makes all the difference. Try to play smooth and connected. Each note should ring up until the point the next one is played. To do this, don't set the guitar pick on the string too early. Don't place a fret hand finger down or lift it too early either. The pick motion and fret hand motions need to happen precisely, at the same time. Work on this at very slow speeds. The longer you hold fingers down, the more you are engaging and exercising those muscles.

The Pentatonic scale has just 5 notes. In D minor they are D - F - G - A - C. The minor pentatonic scale leaves out the 2nd and 6th degrees of the full minor scale. D minor is the related to F major. They share the same notes but have different starting points. For example, the notes in F major pentatonic are F - G - A - C - D
