"Joy to the World" is a great holiday song that uses a descending major scale run in the first phrase of the melody. Here, you can learn that melody in a couple different spots on the guitar neck.
Melodies, and music in general, use scales. That's why it is important to have a basic understanding and physical mastery of scales on the guitar.
