Walk on Boy Guitar Tablature: One Song, Many Styles

Recomended level: Intermediate

Tags: #vocal, #bluesy, #minor key, #traditional bluegrass

Learn "Walk on Boy" for the mandolin. This is a bluesy classic written by Mel Tillis & Wayne Walker, and it was made even more popular by the legendary Doc Watson. There's a lot of different versions to check out here. Read the description for the guitar tablature before you get started. There's arrangement specific tips in each one. Listen regularly as practice in Tunefox and to some of the linked recordings.

Practicing scales and fundamental picking exercises will help you build the facility you need to tackle Walk on Boy and other songs with ease. Go ahead and add the C Major Scales to your favorites. C major is a relative of A minor and shares all the same notes. Knowing that key thoroughly prepares you to play in A minor. You can also check out more A minor scales and workouts in the song list. Add those to your favorites so you can access them quickly.

Doc would use a capo at the second fret to play this in the key of Bm. If you are just playing by yourself you don't need to put the capo on to learn the tune. You could always "capo up" after learning the song if you want to jam or play along with the original recording.

Walk on Boy is played with a swing feel. You can engage that in the playback tab in Tunefox. Listen to the song with and without the swing feel engaged. That will help you understand the difference in time-feel between straight and swing.

With any song, it's best to start with the melody. Learn the basic version. Memorizing the words can help you big time. It helps you connect to the music in a natural and instinctual way. This is best done by repetitive listening to some of the linked recordings. The lyrics are included in the mandolin tablature. This helps you see how the lyrics connect to the melody, and to the chord changes. Saying or singing while you play through the melody or chord changes will be a huge boost to your memory and musicality.

After checking out the melody you will want to dive into a Bluegrass arrangement. This gives you a solid but simple "solo" or "lead break" to work on. Remember to read the descriptions and check out those licks after getting a handle on the basic arrangements.

If you are looking for something more advanced check out one of the Up the Neck versions of this tune or one of the Doc Watson Style arrangements.
