G Major Pentatonic - Melodic Style Workout Banjo Tablature: One Song, Many Styles

The pentatonic scale is one of the most widely used scales across many different genres of music and cultures. It's a bit more rare in the melodic style on banjo, but it can unlock some great new sounds if you've mainly been playing the full major or minor scales.

The notes of the G major pentatonic scale are G - A - B - D - E. It gets a very particular sound. Here's a few good examples of pentatonic scale in action: The guitar intro in "My Girl" by the Temptations. Another is the classic swing tune "Dinah".
The pentatonic scale is also very common in traditional Chinese music. It is also a common scale used when learning to improvise a solo!
The 5 note major pentatonic scale leaves out the 4th and 7th scale degrees of a "full" 7 note major scale. A full G major scale is G - A - B - C - D - E - F#
