Traditional
Rider Banjo Tablature: One Song, Many Styles
Recomended level: Beginner
"Rider" is also known as "I Know You Rider". It is a song that was born in traditional blues. It has been played by many artists in various genres like folk, country, rock, and Bluegrass.
This one is in a "modal" key. That means while it starts and ends on one chord - "G" when in the key of G. There are other chords that momentarily shift the key center until returning "home". Another thing to listen out for: there is a very long space in the melody between phrases. Listen and practice with the Tunefox player to internalize that "distance" in time. As we have written it out, that distance is equal to 4 measures.
Learn the melody first. Always learn the melody first. If you are an intermediate or advanced player, try to learn it by ear using our "hide notes" feature. Listen slowly, one measure at a time. Then use trial and error to figure out the correct notes. If you are on a computer, you can even click on one note at a time to hear it. This way you can learn just one note at a time. It is very good for your understanding of fretboard shapes and the banjo sounds they create to learn the same melody in multiple keys. Try to memorize at least one melody before moving on to a Scruggs, or Two Finger version.
The Scruggs Style versions are designed to be simple and accessible. Get the basic arrangement down, then check out the licks for more authentic Scruggs style banjo vocabulary.
