"Over the Waterfall" is a fiddle tune from the world of Old-Time music. It's a slightly "modal" tune in the key of D. Modal just means you'll use a few notes and chords that aren't typically played in key of D major. This is what helps to give the song a unique sound and flavor.

For these versions of Over the Waterfall for the banjo, you will use "C Shapes". To get into the key of D, you will need to capo at the 2nd fret and 'spike' or capo your 5th string at the 7th fret. To learn more about spikes and capos, check out our Learning Path on Capo Use. If you are just playing by yourself you don't need to capo to learn this tune. The capo is only needed if you are jamming with other players or a recording of this tune and they are playing it i the traditional key of D.
