B Major - Pentatonic Mandolin Tablature: One Song, Many Styles
Recomended level: Intermediate
Learn the basic B major pentatonic scale on the mandolin in two octaves. You will learn to play the scales ascending and descending. Follow the suggested fingerings in the mandolin tablatures. Start with the basic major scale. Try to hold down the fretted notes as long as possible. This will build strength, coordination, and help you get a smooth and clean sound. You can then try the low octave scale. It has a bit more challenge, and demands more of the fret hand.
After getting a hang of the fret hand fingerings for the scales you can then try out the basic workouts. These incorporate alternate picking. Take these very slowly at first. Don't sacrifice accuracy for speed.
The notes in a B major pentatonic scale leave out the 4th and 7th scale degrees of the full major scale. Since the notes in the key of B major are B C# D# E F# G# and A#, the B major pentatonic notes end up being B C# D# F# G#. It's not necessary for you to know this in most instances but learning a bit of music theory now and then can be a good thing.
