B Minor Blues Mandolin Tablature: One Song, Many Styles
Recomended level: Intermediate
Learn the basic B minor blues scale on the mandolin in two octaves. The B minor "blues" scale adds just a single passing tone to the B minor pentatonic scale. The B minor pentatonic scale notes are: B D E F# A. Add in an F "natural" and we get the B minor blues scale: B D E F F# A.
Follow the suggested fingerings in the mandolin tablatures. Start with the scale. This one is played on your lower strings. Try to hold down the fretted notes as long as possible. This will build strength, coordination, and help you get a smoother and cleaner sound. You can then try the high octave scale. It has a bit more challenge as the pinky will be used. Give it a try and just "skip" the pinky note at first if it is too hard. It's better to learn some notes of the high octave than none. You shouldn't give up on something just because you can't do one little thing.
After getting a hang of the fret hand fingerings for the basic scales you can then try out the basic workouts. These incorporate alternate picking. Take these very slowly at first. Don't sacrifice accuracy for speed.
