Backwards Roll Blues
Here's another key phrase for Clinch Mountain Backstep. This one uses a backwards roll, and has much more of a bluesy sound than Scruggs would use. The third fret note on the G string is key to that. That note is a Bb. If you scan the tablature, you will notice that an open B string is almost never played. The B note would give a major or happy sound, and Ralph was known for bringing in more blues influence and a mountain sound.
