Taters

That's Good Eatin'

Here's another bit of basic banjo vocabulary that Ralph used throughout Clinch Mountain Backstep. Some people might call this a "taters" lick because it's often used to start, or kick-off, instrumentals. Those common intro licks are referred to as "taters" or potatoes". Usually, you would string 2 or 4 of these together to establish the tempo to the group and launch into a tune right after.
