Starting Strong

Combing Scruggs and Melodic

The first measure of this lick is just "G" filler any one measure lick will do. The second half is where the Emerson magic happens. We're sliding into a piece of that oh so familiar "root shape" chord(AKA the "F shape"). So there's a little forward roll action there, and then we use just a piece of a melodic scale. Notice, it's slightly altered from the normal G major scale. We're playing an f note on the 3rd fret little d string instead of the normal F# at the 4th fret. This allows us to imply a G7 chord, which you may know produces a really nice leading sound to the C chord. Practice this and all the licks you will learn with the focus feature. Remember these licks can be used in a solo, backup or as a fill!

As you may know it's a movable shape. Depending on where you play this on the neck will determine what chord it is. Here, it's a G shape, and since we're not playing the root on the low D string, this is actually the first inversion!
