A Roll and some Rhythm

Not much is changing in this lick from the original measure. But often, a simple variation can be a powerful one. That's definitely the case here.When your ear, the soloists ear, and the listener's ear, have become accustomed to the sound of a roll, a well placed pinch or two can really freshen things up. It's a new sound, and can help to really reinforce those downbeats or offbeats. When timed well, it definitely helps to shape the rhythm or create groove.
